Hyacinth Bean, Purple
(Lablab purpureus)
Hyacinth bean is native to tropical Africa and has long been grown in northern Africa, parts of Asia, and the Caribbean for the edible flowers, leaves, and immature seeds and pods. Vigorous vines are equally at home in the garden where they tolerate drought, heat, and humidity. Its dark green leaves and purple stems contrast beautifully with lovely sprays of pink-purple flowers followed by shiny, burgundy pods from summer until frost. The flowers are good for cutting, and the pods dry nicely for everlasting arrangements.
