Sunflower ‘Evening Sun’
(Helianthus annuus)
‘Evening Sun’ Sunflower towers from 7-8 feet tall with 5-8 inch flowers in warm, velvety hues. The stunning blooms come in rich brown, maroon, dark gold, and bicolor shades with inner yellow rings reminiscent of the setting sun around their dark centers. The bicolor flowers are a beautiful crimson tipped with cream, and russet browns surrounded by gold. A long bloom season and multi-branching habit with strong stems make ‘Evening Sun’ perfectly suited for the cutting garden as well as back-of-garden borders. Like other sunflowers it is reliably easy to grow and provides pollen and nectar for a large variety of pollinators while in bloom. Once flowers are spent, the seedheads can be left for seed-eating birds such as goldfinches, cardinals, chickadees and jays.
