Wild Blue Iris
(Iris missouriensis)
Wild Blue Iris is a hardy rhizomatous perennial that grows 1-2 ft. tall. Flowers resemble the common garden iris and are pale blue. Flowers typically appear in May or June, depending on the elevation. Seeds have high dormancy and should be planted in fall, or provide cold stratification for 30 days prior to planting in spring. Plants prefer full sun and moist conditions, being found naturally in moist meadows and along stream banks from low valleys to 9,000 ft. elevation in the western U.S and into Mexico.
